OLYMPIA — July 31, 2024 — Washington Trucking Associations President & CEO Sheri Call issued the following statement today regarding a Thurston County Superior Court ruling on the state’s ag fuel exemption under the Climate Commitment Act (CCA). The law, which took effect in January 2023, has driven up prices for the entire trucking industry, not to mention consumers.
“We are extremely disappointed in this ruling, which we had hoped would restore some common sense to this issue and provide a clear path forward. WTA previously urged the Legislature to address this problem, and when they didn’t, our only recourse was to go through the court system,” she said. “The reality is, agriculture and the trucks that support the industry are being unfairly penalized by the Climate Commitment Act. The exemptions system created by the state is a band aid and isn’t adequate, and they don’t seem interested in solving the problem. Industry came back with several fixes and none were good enough.
“They created this scheme of rules – it shouldn’t be on the industry to make it work.”
Call said the WTA is currently evaluating next steps, including an appeal to the Washington State Supreme Court.
